USS Hornet with Aviation Merit Badge, and Mission Peak ROTB Hike

When: January 10-11

Type: Overnight stay at the USS Hornet Saturday night,  Hiking on Sunday.

Cost: $50 per person (Additional $10 for scouts taking Aviation or Radio merit badge.)

Time: For scouts signed up for the Aviation merit badge, meet at Kennedy at 8:30 AM. For others, meet at Kennedy at noon.

 

Come early for tours of the ship and Apollo Missions, ride the simulator. Merit Badge classes will be in the afternoon and formal boarding will be at 5:05 PM after the ship is closed to visitors.

Merit Badges: Scouts can earn the Aviation, Radio or Space Exploration Merit Badge. Check in at 9:15 AM before yoru live aboard experience. Muster out ceremony begins with presenting Colors. Monthly birthday recognition. Junior Crew receives certificate and patch.

Directions to the Hornet: From Cupertino, take 85N towards Mountain View. Exit 237E towards Milpitas. Take 880 North. Proceed until you reach Oakland and take the Broadway exit. At the end of the ramp follow the signs to Alameda, turning right on Broadway and then immediately turning right on 7th street. Go two blocks to Webster and turn right again, entering the Webster Street Tube (tunnel) to Alameda (far left lane). Upon exiting the tube, follow Webster Street to Atlantic Avenue and turn right. Follow Atlantic Avenue through the gate into Alameda Point (formerly Naval Air Station Alameda). Turn left on Ferry Point and proceed along the water towards the cluster of large ships. Parking is available across the street from the USS Hornet.

 

On Sunday, there is Rim of the Bay Hike at Mission Peak.  We'll leave the Hornet between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. If you don't bring a sack lunch, you'll want to stop somewhere to buy a lunch.

 

For those not going to the Hornet, meet us at Ohlone CC at about 11:00 AM. Bring a sack lunch and plenty of water as there is no water anywhere on the trail including  the summit. Trailhead begins at Ohlone College on Mission Blvd. by the swimming pool. Hike detail:  Mission Peak

Directions to Ohlone:
From Interstate 880 South (from the Hornet) - Take the Auto Mall Parkway exit in Fremont and turn left onto Auto Mall Parkway. Stay on Auto Mall Parkway until it turns into Durham Road. Stay straight on Durham Road. Look for Mission Boulevard sign and make a left at the light onto Mission Boulevard. Drive about 1 mile or so. Ohlone College is located at 43600 Mission Boulevard on the right.

From Cupertino:
Take 85 North towards Mtn View and exit on 237 East. From 237, take 880 North. Take the Auto Mall Parkway exit in Fremont and turn right onto Auto Mall Parkway. Stay on Auto Mall Parkway until it turns into Durham Road. Stay straight on Durham Road. Look for Mission Boulevard sign and make a left at the light onto Mission Boulevard. Drive about 1 mile or so. Ohlone College is located at 43600 Mission Boulevard on the right. Go to the back and park near the swimming pool.

 

Spend the night on the USS HORNET as junior crewmembers!

  • Sleep in restored berthing compartments where the real HORNET crew lived
  • Enjoy dinner and breakfast in the Crew's Mess
  • Learn of this famous aircraft carrier's history and adventures
  • Explore the ship and the airplanes on board
  • Ride the flight simulator - experience what it's like to catapult and fly from the carrier
  • Play shipboard games and watch historic movies
  • Hear sea stories
  • Participate in the Aviation, Radio or Space Exploration Merit Badge. Sessions start at 9:30 AM on Saturday and you will need to pre-register.
  • Participate in night watch
  • Earn a special junior crewmember patch & certificate!
  • Ample Free Parking

Cost: The cost of the overnight program WAS $50 per person regardless of age. This price includes museum admission, flight simulator ride, evening programs, dinner, overnight accommodations, breakfast, and awards. (Please check their website for current information)

Adult Leader/Camper Ratio: A minimum of one adult leader is required for every 6 campers (groups with children age 9 or younger – must be accompanied by an adult at a 1:1 ratio). Children must be supervised at all times. Be prepared to organize into parent/youth teams for crew assignments.

Sleeping Areas and other Facilities: Each group is assigned bunks in the ship’s berthing compartments. You will probably share the compartment with another group. Female campers may choose to sleep in a separate compartment.

Equipment to Bring: The berthing compartments are equipped with canvas covered “racks” with foam mattresses. Each person should bring a pillow, sleeping bag, extra blanket in cold weather, toiletries, hand towel, bottled water, flashlight, and a jacket and warm hat in cold weather. Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms.
