Sacramento Historical Trail

When: March 2004

What: Amtrak to Sacramento and hike the Sacramento Historic Trail

Campsite: Camp Pollock (Sacramento Valley Conservancy)

Cost: Exact costs for train fare will vary depending on what types of special fares are available. If you plan well, there is a large amount of savings for group rates, but you have to make reservations several weeks in advance and submit a roster, which cannot be altered. Also, look for blackout dates.

Requirements:

  1. Hike the trail, as shown on the map, from the Old Sacramento to Sutter’s Fort and return (about 5 miles total)

  2. Visit the State Capitol and State Railroad Museum

  3. A visit to Sutter’s Fort is recommended

  4. File a report with the Golden Empire Council listing the names of Scouts and Scouters that complete the hike.

  5. Patches can be purchased from the Golden Empire Council Scout Store for $2.50 plus sales tax. Price subject to change.

How to take the hike

1)     Big Four Building.  From the RR Museum, exit to the right. Big Four Building is located and the RR Library and the Hardware store is located within.

2)     The earliest Sacramento, a tent city.

3)     Sacramento History Museum

4)     Central Pacific RR Passenger Station

5)     Eagle Theatre. Across the street from the CPRP Station

6)     Cobblestone Streets

7)     The Globe and the Delta King.

8)     Pony Express Rider statue. NE Corner of 2nd and J Street

9)     RR Museum (Save your ticket stubs)

10) Sacramento Southern RR.  From Front Street, go up K. St. to see the Lady Adams Building. Return to Front St. and you can go to the Visitor’s Center. Continue on Front St. to the Old Schoolhouse Museum on the SW corner of Front and L Streets.

11)  Hike down K Street past the Convention Center to the State Indian Museum. Go to L Street to Sutter’s Fort.

12)  From Sutter’s Fort, hike down L Street and cut over to the State Capitol and take a self-guided tour.

13) From the State Capitol, hike down Capitol Avenue to 9th Street and head south to N Street. Visit Stanford House.

14) From Stanford House, head west on N Street and turn left on 3rd Street to Crocker Art Gallery.

15) Head back up Front Street and under Capitol to Old Town

 

Estimated time

From Old Town to Sutter Fort and back is five miles. Estimate of 2hours

Time at RR Museum, 90 minutes

Time at State Capitol, 60 minutes

Time at Sutter’s Fort, 60 minutes.

Time at Historic Museum, 30 minutes

Total estimated time: 4.5 hours.

California State Railroad Museum is open daily from 10AM to 5PM. Located at 2nd and I Streets, Old Sacramento near the Amtrak station. Admission for adults is $4 and free admission for children 16 and younger.

Capitol Building, 10th and L Streets, Sacramento

The State Capitol is a working Museum that has served since 1869 as home to the legislative branch of state government and the Governor’s Office. State Indian Museum

On the grounds of Sutter’s Fort in downtown Sacramento, the California State Indian Museum displays exhibits and artifacts illustrating the culture of the state’s earliest inhabitants.

Sutter's Fort State Historical Park

Sacramento’s earliest settlement was founded by John Sutter in 1839. Self-guided tours explain the unique museum exhibits, a visitor orientation room and exhibit rooms, carpenter’s and blacksmith’s shops, bakery, dining room, and living quarters. Living history programs and demonstrations.

The California Military Museum in Old Town. Exhibits reflect California’s rich militia and U.S. Military history from pre-statehood to contemporary times. The museum contains military items and personal memorabilia on 3 floors of exhibits. Veterans tell war stories and lead guided tours every day at California’s official military. CURRENTLY CLOSED The museum was closed due to a dispute and then remained close due to cost issues from their location. Camp Roberts currently is the site to view Caliofrnia Military memoralbilia.
