Monterey Sailing & Historic Hike

Agenda

August 16-17, 2003

What: Sailing, Monterey Historic Hike and Family Camping

We’ll sail Monterey Bay for two hours and then return to camp to prepare dinner and a campfire. On Sunday, we’ll head back down to Monterey to hike the Monterey Historic Trail.

Campsite: Veteran’s Park in Monterey

There will be lots of space for family camping. We ask families to pitch their tents separately from the scouts and let them prepare their own meals. Other than that, you’re all welcome to eat with them and participate on the hike and campfire. Siblings that are scouts (brownies, girl scouts and cub scouts) are also welcome to participate in earning the patch. To earn the patch, you have to hike the trail and fill out a questionnaire (like a knowledge scavenger hunt!)

This 50-acre park with overnight group camping, walking trails, BBQ picnic areas, play equipment, turf playfield, is located in Monterey. The Park has a basketball court, limited hiking trails, and a large lawn area which can be used for Frisbee, kite flying, football, softball and relaxing.

Location
Veteran's Memorial Park may be reached by taking Highway 68 west from Highway 1 until you see a white adobe wall on the right side of the road with black letters that says "Skyline Forest". Turn right there, go to Skyline Drive and turn left. Skyline Drive will lead you right into the Park. Veteran’s Memorial Park is about 1 mile away from historic downtown Monterey. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is about 1 ½ miles from the park, and various beaches are within 2 miles.

Youth Group Areas
Two group areas are available for overnight youth groups of up to 100 people. Each has a large double BBQ pit for cooking, tables, and water is available. Restrooms and showers are available, also. The fee for use of these areas is $4.00 per person per night by calling the Park Attendant at 646.3865 or coming by the Park.

Attendant
A Park Attendant resides in the Park. For more info, see the attendant at the Park; call 831.646.3865
